JIF ALIEN ATTACK

I remember watching the ‘Jif Alien Attack’ advert way back in 1977 and being totally bowled over by it.

Technically, I suppose it will go down as the last proper Supermarionation production.

Three puppets featured in the ad. The John and Julie puppets from the aborted ‘Investigator’ pilot from 1972, and a specially made puppet caricatured to look like Albert Einstein.

Ed Bishop was one of  the voice artists along with a voice I seem to recognize as Cyril Shaps as the Professor.

David Lane directed the ad, which featured special effects by Brian Johnson and Nick Adler, with models by Martin Bower. Barry Gray’s, Thunderbird Theme along with some Thunderbird incidental music was used as the soundtrack.

Prior to appearing on TV it was apparently shown in cinemas before screenings of Star Wars: A New Hope.

The characters all work for Intergalactic Rescue, protecting Earth from extraterrestrial invasion.

Alien flying dishes filled with ice cream, rice pudding, semolina and other gooey desserts attempt to swamp the Earth.

Intergalactic Rescue launch Jif fruit syrup  dessert toppings from underground silos on the Moon.

BANDAI DX RHINO

 Rhino Tactical Response Unit

The Bandai New Captain Scarlet DX Rhino is a big toy. It might not have the iconic lines of the Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle but it’s certainly an interesting design.

Obviously it takes it’s cue from the SPV  with five wheels either side, a sloping front and unique way of exiting the vehicle, but this is very much a modern design with a nod to current technology and a obsession for distinctive signage.

The toy has some lovely detail and looking at my photos I do consider how the Rhino would have looked if the series had used miniatures rather than CGI.

It’s packed full of gadgets including sound effects. A front panel slides up to take spring-loaded missiles.

Machine guns can be fitted to the front wings or the top hatch.

The side door flicks open revealing a sliding seat suitable for an action figure.

The top hatch can also take an action figure.

I have to say I'm warming the design of the Rhino. While it has a hard act to follow and could never come close to the unique and pleasing design of the SPV it does have it's own intriguing lines, as well as some good points and on top of that makes a pretty good toy to boot.

THE CENTURY 21 TOYS MOONSHIP AND AHI SUPER ROCKET PLANE

As part of their general space range in 1967 Century 21 Toys produced the Moonship. It was a sleek cigar-shaped rocket about a foot long with friction drive. It was misquoted in the toy trade press at the time as being part of the Project SWORD range. Still, it does adds a certain kudos to it.

Century 21 Toys made two colour variations. One had navy blue engines and side panels, along with red roof stripes [above].

The second one had red engines and side panels and blue roof stripes. Both had white fuselages and silvered nose, engine and rear shields. They both came with a Union Jack sticker and were numbered 6801.

Not to be outdone by the Brits, the American plastic giants AHI bootlegged their own version, the blue and red Super Rocket Plane above. In classic knockoff style AHI simply created another colour combination from the same three basic colours. I think they did a superb job myself!

Tip silvering isn't present on my own example but it may have been there originally. The nose, engine and rear shields are made of recycled marbled plastic.

The Century 21 box is a long window box with flaps at each end. The graphics are on the back. I don't know why but find it a disappointment for such a fabulous toy but I've never actually seen the box in the flesh.

Using Century 21 's artwork  AHI did a better job I think, creating a blue and green extravaganza of colour for their Super Rocket Plane.

For the completist Moonship collector there is a third version. This one is tinplate and made in China. It's somewhat shorter than it's plastic cousins and has more paint detailing. Its friction drive too and comes in a snazzy two-part box.

When I first got my tinplate Moonship I thought it was the Century 21 toy. Before the internet it was difficult finding out hard facts about toys and only years later did I discover what I actually had.

I'm pleased to say that I now have all three Moonships. I'm missing the blue and white C21 variant and all the three differnt boxes, but I've made some mock ups and they seem to do the job.

Does anyone else have a Moonship?

Z IS FOR Z - KNIGHTS

During my 80/90's fascination with all things robotic, I was delighted to find a series of non-transforming robot models by Tomy. As it later turned out, they had been hugely popular in Japan and broke on the european shores with a smaller range. Tomy uk decided to name the range after computer terms such as Megahertz  CPU and Hacker. The robots came in two sizes, six and ten inch, both powered by battery. Features including a great walking action, swinging arms and moving heads. The idea was to 'fight' the good robots against the bad, the powerful little motors allowing for some interesting tussles. In the larger models, a concealed hatch revealed a small chrome pilot who could easily be cousin to the Golden Astronaut!

THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE

“Conquerors From A Dying World Invade Earth!” - So proclaimed the cinema poster for another of one of my favourite British Sci-Fi  ’B’ movies from the sixties.

They Came From Beyond Space was an Amicus production, famous for their portmanteau films like Dr Terrors House Of Horrors and Torture Garden.

It starred American actor,  Robert Hutton  as Curtis Temple , a scientist on the search for extraterrestrial life. Hutton  appeared in several British films and TV series. He was seen as cyborg filmstar, Bruce Benton in Amicus’, Torture Garden.

Jennifer Jane played Lee Mason, assistant and love interest. A prolific actress, and writer. She wrote another portmanteau piece, Tales that Witness Madness which featured Jack Hawkins and Donald Pleasance, and  the Son of Dracula starring Ringo Star as Merlin the Magician!  She appeared in Amicus’, Dr Terror’s House Of Horrors, as Vampire Nicolle Carroll.

Zia Mohyeddin,  played scientist Farge.  A Pakistani actor who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. An accomplished  performer who appeared  in many British Films and TV series. His film debut was in Lawrence of Arabia in 1962.

Bernard Kay played Richard Arden, the government official. Another prolific actor who appeared in pretty much every classic TV series since the year dot. He also appeared in Amicus’ Torture Garden, playing Dr Heim in the same segment as Robert Hutton, ‘Terror Over Hollywood’.

A principle ingredient in any British Sci-fi flick from the sixties is to have it take place in some quintessential English village isolated from authority and ripe for take over.

A lot of the location filming took in the picturesque village of  Cookham  which has played host to many productions right up to today.

Amicus had dabbled with science fiction previously with the two Peter Cushing Dalek movies and The Terrornauts starring Simon Oats.

For anyone who has missed out on this classic ‘so bad it’s good’ film here’s a brief synopsis.

Meteorites land in perfect formation in a field belonging to a nearby farm. A government official, Richard Arden approaches Dr Curtis Temple, a leading astrophysicist and his two assistants, Alan Mulldane, and Lee Mason.

Arden wants Curtis to visit the crash site, however, recent surgery on his skull involving a silver metal plate  following an auto accident means Curtis must send his two assistants.

At the crash site it is revealed the meteorites are containers for alien entities who begin to take over the minds and bodies of all who come in contact with them.

Curtis’ assistant, Mulldane works out that the meteorites have come from the Moon.

Not having heard from with the crash site and the scientists working there for several days, Curtis takes it on himself to find out what’s happened .

He finds the nearby farm  is surrounded by electrified fences and underground laboratories, as well as cold stores filled with seemingly dead bodies some of which have been reanimated to act as slaves.

He manages to gain entry and rescue a zombified  Lee, whom he has a romantic attachment and whisks her off to another scientist friend, Farge, an optical specialist.

It’s discovered the metal plate in Curtis’ head  prevents the aliens from taking over his mind, so he creates an external plate using silver cups and a kitchen colander for Farge.

Once Lee is free of  alien influence, she gets to wear a protective metal plate, and all three go back to the farm and sneak aboard a recently constructed alien spacecraft bound for the Moon.

After meeting the alien leader, the Master Of The Moon, it’s revealed the aliens had crashed on the Moon and needed people to repair their starship.

After the aliens attempt to remove the plate from Curtis’head,  Farge who has escaped, leads a revolt of the slave men and saves Curtis in the nick of time.

Curtis, now in control tells the Master Of The Moon and the other aliens they need only to have asked for mankind’s help. The Master releases the body it has taken over as a sign of good faith, and a new era of friendship begins between the Earthmen and beings from beyond space.
